Ashwagandha is known as Withania somnifera in the scientific language, Indian ginseng or winter cherry in the common language. It is an annual evergreen shrub that grows in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, China and parts of Africa. It belongs to the family of nightshade or Solanaceae. They are a family of plants that can range from annual to perennial herbs to trees, epiphytes, shrubs etc. are included. There are around 2700 species of this family but not all are edible. Limited studies also suggest that different parts of plants have protective effects on glioma cell lines, as well as human fibroblasts.

It helps reduce the damage done to the bladder during chemotherapy for leukopenia. A study done on animals found that it protects from seizures done by pentylenetetrazol in a mouse when it was used with it for over 9 weeks. pentylenetetrazol is a medicine that is used in patients suffering from depression. The same research group found the extract active in a rat suffering from seizures longer than 5 minutes.
